Every day thousands of Kansas City children head to school riding a school bus.
That is why school leaders are renewing a push for safety for National School Bus Safety Week.
This year, they are asking to students to put down their electronic devices when walking. They say more and more students are distracted by cell phones, iPads and iPods.
In 2007, 26 students were killed while getting on and off the bus or while waiting at the school bus stop.
School leaders want to warn students to stay out of the 10-foot danger zone to make sure their bus driver can see them.
An easy way for parents to teach their children is to ask them to take at least five giant steps away from the edge of the road.
Students should stand on the grass or sidewalk while waiting for the bus and not enter the street until the driver has opened the door of the bus.
Despite recent crashes involving school buses in the Crest Ridge and Independence school districts, school buses are considered one of the safest forms of transportation.
"Historically, buses are the safest vehicles on the roadways, for the size that they are, for the slow speeds that they travel, and that's what we want. They have high backed compartments and high backed seats and they are safer," said Sgt. Collin Stosberg with the Missouri Highway Patrol.
It is against the law to pass a stopped school bus from either direction when the stop arm is extended.
Safe Kids Kansas reminds drivers that they should stop not only because it is a law but also because it could save a life.
