Aspiring KC filmmaker hopes to win $1M for Doritos commercial

Posted: Updated:

A local aspiring filmmaker is getting a lot of buzz for his Doritos commercial.

Kyle Kelley entered it into the company's Crash the Super Bowl contest online, and so far it has ranked in the top 5 submitted.

Kelley spent endless hours perfecting his commercial. The concept was simple. It shows an old grandmother walking down the street when a burglar snatches her purse. She then gets even.

"She is going to get you because there is not money in the purse. You took her Doritos," Kelley said.

Getting it done wasn't so easy. Kelley and his team ran into problem after problem.

"We bought lighting kits, and when we get down there, there is no electrical for us to shoot," he said.

They came up with a military blanket to reflect the sun. They also had a tough time keeping their main prop consistent.

"Nine bags, a lot of Doritos, and then the bags weren't matching. We needed continuity," Kelley said.

And the big blow came when their original "tough grandma" canceled last minute. So actress Kathy Breeden stepped in.

"I frankly didn't know the story line until I got there. They said something like, 'we're doing something like Mrs. Doubtfire,'" Breeden said.

The biggest challenge for her was finding a wig.

But despite a rough start, "Tough Granny" is winning over the hearts of voters.

"There are a lot of Super Bowl commercials every year and usually they deal with a lot of liquor, babies or animals. We never have seen a tough grandma before ... a woman who stands up for the elderly and beats some butt if she needs to," Kelley said.

The commercial has smoothly worked it way up in the ranks. It is now rated fourth place in the competition.

Finalists win a trip to the Super Bowl. The winner gets to work on the next Avengers film and wins $1 million.

Kelley said if he wins, he wants to pay off his parent's home.
