Suspects shot at after trying to elude Independence officer

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

All four suspects allegedly involved in a short police chase in Independence are in custody.

Police tried to make a routine traffic stop on a car just before 6 a.m. Tuesday when the driver refused to stop.  That is when the chase began.

The chase ended at East 24th and Harvard Avenue when the suspects rammed a police car.

Officers fired shots and three of the four were taken into custody.

"The vehicle stopped here in between two houses, like they normally would, and the suspect put it in reverse and started ramming our vehicles," Capt. Paul Thurman said.

One of the suspects was taken to the hospital with an injury, but the suspects were not hit by police gunfire.

The fourth suspect was captured a few hours later at a McDonalds on East 23rd Street and South Sterling Avenue.

It is not clear why authorities attempted to stop the car in the first place or why the suspects fled.
