NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville woman is recovering in the hospital a day after she was shot in her sleep by a stray bullet that came flying through her apartment ceiling and straight through her shoulder.

David White, the man who lives upstairs, told police he was playing with his gun when it went off and the bullet went through the floor around 11 p.m.

Police say the woman was in her bed reading at Pine Brook Apartments on Hickory Hill Lane in Hermitage at the time of the incident.

"I heard the lady next door screaming that she had gotten shot," said neighbor Janice Neal. "The bullet hole was through the ceiling. Blood was everywhere."

She has been taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The woman is said to be in stable condition.

Neighbors say it's not the first time they've heard shots ring out in the apartment complex, and they won't even let their kids outside to play.

"It's so much drugs going on here that management has no idea," Neal said.

Everyone survived this accident, and those who did are fed up but thankful it wasn't worse.

"You pray before you go to bed, and you ask the Lord to take care of you and your family, but you also ask the Lord to protect your neighbors. And he was on his job last night," Neal said.

White surrendered to detectives and is in custody. He is facing charges of reckless endangerment, possession of a controlled substance and possession of prescription medication without a prescription.

Police say they found a small amount of a green plant in White's apartment that they think could be marijuana.

Channel 4 News reached out to the owners of the apartment complex who said no one was available to comment.
