Those who knew and loved Andre Maloney came together Wednesday afternoon to celebrate his 17 too short years.
Maloney, a star wide receiver at Shawnee Mission West, suffered a stroke after scoring on a long touchdown last Thursday. He collapsed and would later die at an area hospital.
His devastated family, friends, coaches, teammates, faculty and others said their goodbyes at Church of the Holy Cross. Following the funeral service, Maloney was buried at Resurrection Cemetery.
A lot of people who had been at the game were in attendance at his funeral, along with family and friends.
Maloney's cousin, Karla Montoya, said she wasn't surprised by the large turnout.
"What you're seeing right now is everybody who was touched by Andre coming and supporting not only the family, but also him because he's still with us and among us. His spirit flows within everybody and that's why you see all these people coming in because they were touched by him," she said. "He brought not only his talent of being a great athlete, but he brought in his charisma and way of life. He was full of life. He loved just being with his friends and making people laugh. He had this way about himself where, you know, he had no enemies. That's very important and a lot of people respect that because that's who he was."
Shawnee Mission West was playing Leavenworth High School last Thursday night. Shawnee Mission West was winning until Maloney collapsed and lost on a last-second field goal.
Leavenworth won this week's Hy-Vee Team of the Week from KCTV5. The team asked for those voting for them to do so in Andre's memory and on behalf of the Maloney.
District officials said they would give their trophy to Shawnee Mission West in Maloney's honor. Shawnee Mission school district officials said they considered it a lovely and compassionate gesture, which they greatly appreciated.
The district issued the following statement:
Coach Callaghan and the Vikings congratulate Coach Littrell and the Leavenworth Pioneers on their selection as Hy-Vee's Team of the Week. The Pioneer football program has earned this well-deserved recognition. The Shawnee Mission West community appreciates the tremendous outpouring of concern that has been shown this past week by Leavenworth and the community at large. Leavenworth's desire to honor Andre Maloney with this recognition demonstrates the true meaning of compassion and the heart of sportsmanship.
