KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
The mother of a 14-year-old girl killed in a car crash Monday evening said she doesn't believe what some other teens involved said happened.
Wednesday, three of the teens appeared in juvenile court.
More than 200 family and friends attended a candlelight vigil Wednesday night at the Turner Recreational Center to remember 14-year-old Casey Knight. They were asked to wear pink and blue, Casey's favorite colors. Copious tears were shed as they remembered happier times.
Casey's mother wants to know why four other teens who were Casey's friends traveling in the SUV that crashed ran from the scene and never called 911 for help as they left behind Casey and another critically injured teen.
"Someone should be responsible. At least for that fact that they didn't go back to check. What if they could have saved her, you know?" said Teri Bishop, Casey's mom.
Bishop and her family came to juvenile court Wednesday to find out what charges would be filed against the 14-year-old driver of the SUV who took five teens on a joyride Monday shortly before 5 p.m. that ended with a crash at 12th and Dodson streets. The crash killed Casey and left another girl in the hospital in critical condition.
The 14-year-old boy was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. But the family also wants to see charges brought against the teens shown in a neighbor's surveillance video who left the scene of the crash without calling 911.
"How do you not know someone was ejected out of the vehicle? How did you not see that?" Bishop asked.
But the mother of one of the girls seen in the surveillance video said there is another side to the story. She said her daughter, the one seen holding her side, didn't know that anyone was hurt.
"The kid's in shock, they had just been in a horrific accident. All the kids were out of the cars. Everyone thought they just dispersed their own ways," Jamie Carr said. "She came home and she was crying and freaking out and said she could not get a hold of her friend Casey and then the police came."
Two of the teens in the video are being held for violating their probation on previous crimes, but Carr's daughter was released Wednesday.
Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerry Gorman said the investigation continues and more charges could come.
"There's a charge about leaving the scene of an injury accident and we will have to determine whether that could apply to the others," he said.
Casey's mom hopes the charges come soon for the teens she says left her daughter there to die.
"They didn't even turn their heads. They didn't even care," Bishop said.
Bishop also said she called Casey's best friend to find out where Casey was Monday night and the friend lied to her and said they had dropped her off at her house two hours earlier. Bishop said the friend never said anything to her about the wreck.
Family has set up a fund to help pay for funeral expenses. People can donate to the Casey Shyla Knight Memorial Fund at any Community America Credit Union.
