Deadline passes, no trade for Tony Gonzalez, Jared Allen

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Two former Kansas City Chiefs players were hot commodities on the NFL trade block, but ultimately neither tight end Tony Gonzalez or defensive end Jared Allen were dealt by their teams.

No major deals occurred before the trade deadline at 3 p.m.

The Chiefs had reportedly spoken to the Atlanta Falcons about trading for Gonzalez, but a deal did not occur. The Denver Broncos reportedly had talked about trading for Allen, but age and salary apparently led to no one trading for the former Chiefs player.

Gonzalez was one of the most popular Chiefs players, but he left in 2009 to play for a winning team with Kansas City playing woebegone football.

But with the Atlanta Falcons season on life support and the Chiefs 8-0, some had thought it made sense for the man known as "Tony G" to return to Kansas City.

Gonzalez was crushed when the Falcons lost in the NFC title game earlier this year and vowed to come back for one last season to make another run deep in the playoffs. That's unlikely to happen with the Falcons this year after that team has been decimated by injuries.

For his part, Gonzalez squashed the rumors, saying he intends to retire a Falcon. And Atlanta is unlikely to undercut their star quarterback, Matt Ryan, by dealing the 37-year-old future Hall of Famer.

But Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey earlier this month didn't totally rule out a trade.

"I'm very frugal with those draft picks," Dorsey said then in reference to what he would give up for the tight end.

Dorsey said he expects to see Gonzalez back at Arrowhead Stadium before cheering crowds after his retirement and his name is put up in the Ring of Honor.

"No, it's not a no," Dorsey replied when pressed. "We have to analyze each situation. That's kind of what that is."

Gonzalez would have received a big welcome back from some of his former teammates.

Cornerback Brandon Flowers spoke highly of Gonzalez.

"I'd love to have him back here. That's one of the guys, he was definitely a pro. He definitely taught me how to be a pro in this locker room," Flowers said earlier this month when asked about the Chiefs trading for their former tight end. "He's just a great guy to have on your team. You can ask anybody that ever played with him. So I would welcome him back with open arms."

Gonzalez was drafted by the Chiefs in 1997.
