Update: Police initially said those involved were women. They now say the person killed was a 14-year-old girl, Casey Knight.
One woman died in a crash just before 5 p.m. Monday in KCK.
The crash happened near 12th and Dodson streets. The woman behind the wheel died at the scene.
A second woman, who was a passenger, is in critical condition, authorities said.
Police said the wreck happened after the driver swerved to avoid a barricade and went off the road. Authorities are working to determine whether speed was a factor.
The driver was heading eastbound on 12th Street and went around a barricade on Dodson Street. The road ended, which is where the crash occurred. Neighbors said the area has been closed off to motorists for more than two years.
"(The barricade) seems to slow the traffic flow down, so I don't mind it that much, but for other people it is a big problem," said Robert Patrick, who lives near the scene of the deadly accident.
Patrick has lived in the are for 10 years and says drivers barrel through 12th Street all the time. Just last year, he found just how dangerous that could be.
"I had a young lady drive through the telephone pole and land on my roof just a year ago, coming down the hill from the other direction," Patrick said.
Kansas City, KS, police said that is just one factor they're looking at in this investigation.
"They've marked off the area to figure out where the vehicle hit and landed and speeds and factors of that sort," officer Patrick McCallop said.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Neighbors say the was road closed because it was damaged or eroded by water from rain. Others says it was because of an excavation job that was never completed.
KCTV5 did reach out to the city for an answer, but it was after hours and haven't heard back.
