Girl, 4, killed in KCK house fire

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A KCK family is living through the kind of grief no one should ever experience after losing a little girl in a house fire.

Neighbors can still smell the smoke from the charred house in the 4600 block of Greeley Avenue where the 4-year-old was killed in the fire.

Firefighters were called to the one-story home about 4:15 a.m. Sunday.  It burned so quickly. Crews tried to keep up, knowing two people had made it out, but the child was still inside.

"My baby is in there," the girl's anguished mother cried as she rushed home from work to find this scene.

Firefighters had to hold her up to keep her from collapsing or running inside.

When they finally managed to get the little girl out, emergency crews rushed to save her, but it was too late.

"When you lose a child, it is a tragedy," the child's aunt, Cynthia Timms, said.

Timms and her husband came by the house after the fire, trying to process what happened.

"She was a real loving little girl.  Her daddy would call her, 'booties,' and call her, 'little princess.' She would walk around acting like a little princess," Timms said.

They came straight from the hospital where the child's 7-year-old sister and grandmother, who was home with the girls, both had to be treated.

The surviving sister is still not out of danger.

"She is having it hard, because she has asthma and plus the smoke didn't make it any better.  We are trying to make sure that she is fine," Timms said.

A neighbor sat with the older sister through the chaos until an ambulance took her away.

"Just calm her down, just hold her and just be there for her," Timms said.

And the family said that kind of support is what they all need now.

"You are supposed to outlive your kid, but when your kid goes before you do, that really takes a toll on you. I just ask everybody to pray for them," Timms said.

A firefighter suffered second-degree burns to his face while trying to get to the little girl and rescue her.

The family said they believe the fire started in the kitchen, but the cause is still under investigation.

Firefighters said the house had no working smoking detectors.
