Mother says extreme bullying caused her to pull son from school

Posted: Updated:

Bullying cases are being reported at many school districts across the country, but it hit home for a Missouri family.

Damien Loyd, 12 and his mother spoke about the bullying he experienced at Lexington Middle School. She said it almost drove him to suicide and the only solution was to leave school.

At this school Damien doesn't have to go very far to attend class. He said his family's decision for home schooling also means he is no longer subjected to physical abuse from cruel peers.

"(They would) slap me, hit me, elbow me, try to trip me in the hallway, throw spitballs at me," Damien said.

He said this happened just about every day and the faculty did little to stop it.

"Yeah (I told my teachers), but I ended up most of the time getting into trouble," Damien said.

It's barely three months into the school year and Damien is already the subject of two incident reports related to bullying.

Rebecah Willard said she saw the toll it was taking on her son.

"I'm sad. I worry about him all the time. He battled depression over it, and he had thoughts of suicide," she said.

KCTV5 News contacted the Lexington School District superintendent about Damien's case. In a phone conversation, Dr. Robert Newhart said, "We are working through the situation. We do not take any bullying or altercation lightly, and we treat each situation on an individual basis. The entire educating of students and staff on bullying is an ongoing process."

Damien said he has no desire to return to the school.

"I don't have to worry about people bullying me really, and I can concentrate better and actually do good," he said.

Damien said he is doing well and his test scores have improved. His mother said he is no longer able to take part in physical education or music classes because he is home schooled, but that he says he's a lot happier and calmer.

The superintendent said one child was disciplined in connection to Damien's case.
