Dog missing for nearly 2 weeks found in storm drain

WOODBURY, CT (WFSB) -

A dog reported missing for nearly two weeks was found stuck in a storm drain in Woodbury Thursday morning.

Cynthia Edgar was walking Puff, a 14-year-old black lab mix, when the dog got loose and ran away.

"I had just about lost all hope that I would find her again," Edgar said.

For nearly two weeks, Edgar said she plastered the town with about 70 signs in hopes of finding Puff. Edgar had no luck until Thursday.

Police said Holly Pinto was walking into West Chevrolet when she heard a faint whimper and found the dog stuck in the storm drain.

"I came outside and I could hear the dog crying," Pinto said.

Once Puff was found under South Main Street, The Public Works Department lifted the drain and West Chevrolet Manager Bill Gilbeault jumped in with a harness in hand. But Puff wasn't going to make it easy.

"We had some food in there, trying to draw her out. Finally, she ended up poking her head out of the pipe," Gilbeault said.

Two hours of prodding and coaxing, all in vain. All that was needed was Edgar and her familiar voice.

"The dog heard her voice and came out of the pipe," Gilbeault said.

"I had tears of joy," Edgar said. "I had been crying all week because I missed her and I was so grateful that she'd been found."

Pulled from what Edgar is calling the brink of sure death, she and Puff were reunited at last.

"I think God was looking out for her," Edgar said. "I'm so very happy to have her back."

Puff is in good condition. Officials said labs like that can go without food for that long and there was enough water in the drain for the animal.

Puff had a small scratch on her back, she was checked out by a veterinarian and that's the only thing wrong with her.
