TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL/CNN) – A family's dog is recuperating after nearly giving its own life to save its owners from a house fire.
"If we didn't hear him, we wouldn't have gotten up, and we would've been the ones in the hospital or dead or anything," said Sierra Plair, the mother of two kids and the owner of Onyx, the pit bull puppy.
To Plair, her nine-month-old puppy is more than just a family pet, he's a hero.
Fire damaged Blair's home on Thursday morning. Onyx alerted the family and they escaped unharmed. But Onyx is now recovering at a local animal hospital with burns covering his body.
The family said Onyx was inside his cage on the back porch when the fire broke out. When they heard him yelp, they knew something was terribly wrong. Plair's fiancé Trevor Myers says that when he rushed outside.
Myers said he found Onyx on fire and doused him with water as Plair went upstairs to get her children out of the house. The family of four made it to safety.
Fire investigators say the cause of the fire was arson, and it's a frightening reality for Plair.
"Honestly, the person who did this to my home doesn't want to know how I feel, because I feel like someone tried to kill me and my family. They harmed my dog," Plair said.
Plair says Onyx is expected to make a full recovery, and she's just thankful that he'll be able to return home.
