Alert officers discover pot growing operation

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Some Kansas City, KS, police officers were out doing their regular patrols when they smelled the heavy odor of marijuana coming from a house near North 48th Terrace and Leavenworth Road. When they searched inside, they discovered a grow operation.

Police said there was quite a set-up at the house on North 48th Terrace. They found lamps and other equipment being used to cultivate 100 marijuana plants.

One resident, who didn't want her identity revealed, described part of the pot bust.

"There was the U.S. Marshals and they showed us a picture of this girl, and this guy and asked us if we'd seen them," the woman said.

Authorities said the house was empty when they served the search warrant to investigate for suspicion of drugs. It appeared to them that no one was actually living in the home, but that it was being used solely as a place to grow marijuana.

"That's scary, very scary. I don't know, it brings a lot of violence to the neighborhood. We just don't need it around here. It's (the neighborhood) very quiet," the neighbor said.

KCTV5 learned the house was a rental property. The landlord, who lives out of town, spoke by phone and said they had no idea what was taking place inside of their property until they got a call from police.

The landlord said the renter would mail his monthly check to them, so they never stopped by the house to be alerted to the secret drug operation.

The neighbor said she is just glad police put a stop to the dangerous business.

"I think it's great. I think they did a good job of smelling it, and getting it and bringing it out. I hope they never come back," the neighbor said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is now involved in the case. There's no word yet if the people who were growing the marijuana have been arrested.

The investigation continues.
