Police said a married elderly couple were killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon.
The crash happened at 3:38 p.m. at 79th Street and Mastin Drive.
Police said a 19-year-old man was test driving a gray Mitsubishi Eclipse southbound on Mastin toward 79th when he failed to stop for a stop sign and struck a white Cadillac Deville. The Cadillac, which was being driven by an 86-year-old man, was traveling eastbound on 79th.
The 19-year-old driver was not injured and his 18-year-old male passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The couple in the Cadillac were taken to the hospital with critical injuries and they later died.
They were identified Friday morning as Norman J. Russell and Norma F. Russell, 80.
The Traffic Safety Unit is conducting the fatality investigation. Police said the 19-year-old driver admitted to running the stop sign, and they expect to seek charges against the driver. Speed is possibly a contributing factor.
The car dealership owner said the 19-year-old man had just pulled out of the parking lot and turned a corner when the crash occurred.
"They were looking at a couple of cars and they asked to drive one. They went for a drive," said Jonathan Tucker of Rock Auto KC. "It's sad how it ended."
He offered his condolences to the couple's family and friends.
"When we heard it happened, we all said a prayer for everyone involved in this accident," Tucker said. "It's definitely a sad situation."
