Ray Charles honored with anniversary Forever Stamps

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany native and music legend Ray Charles is being featured on a new stamp by the United States Postal Service.

They are honoring him with a Forever Stamp that is part of a special series, called "Music Icons Forever."

"I think that's fantastic to recognize someone that came from our town and was a music mogul and made it to the top," said Albany Resident Elena Acevedo.

Charles was a blind singer and songwriter, born in Albany on September 23, 1930. He overcame hardships to take over the soul and rhythm and blues genres. He died in 2004. Now his signature smile is splashed across stamps for everyone to see.

"He's certainly famous worldwide and he's a native and I think a lot of local people would find this to be interesting and I think they might be interested in buying the stamps," said Albany resident David Nelson.

Rashelle Beasley, the Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau director, says the Ray Charles Plaza in downtown Albany continues to bring in tourists from all over the world.

"It's a great opportunity for Albany," said Beasley. "It's a great opportunity for us to be able to promote Ray.  He is our native son and our life size statue here. Having the stamp is just a reminder of Ray and the great songs that he did."

Many other Albany residents say they hope others will do the same, spreading Ray Charles' legacy, one stamp at a time.

Monday would have been Ray Charles' 83rd birthday.  Events were held in Atlanta and Los Angeles to celebrate the induction. You can buy the stamps at your local post office or online. A sheet of 16 costs $7.37.
