More tasks for the Four Forest Restoration Initiative

FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -

An additional five task orders have been issued by the U.S. Forest Service to the new Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI).

A total of 8,541 acres have been added to the contractor Good Earth Power AZ, LLC., which was issued the contract for 300,000 acres back in May 2012.

On Sept. 16, the Mercer Task Order was added for 952 acres in the Tonto National Forest. Four task orders were also issued for Coconino National Forest. Those orders include Elk Park for 2,901 acres, Clark for 1,684 acres, Bobs for 2,017 acres and Weatherford for 1,017 acres.

According to the Forest Service, a total of 15,219 acres of task orders have been issued across Tonto, Coconino, Apache-Sitgreaves, and Kaibab National Forests under 4FRI.  

The Forest Services reports that so far 600 acres have been completed in the Apache-Sitgreaves.

The restoration of the forests in northern Arizona is supposed to help improve ecological resilience and function of the 2.4 million acres of the Ponderosa Pine forests.
