After assault, teachers demand more protection

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The union representing teachers in the Hickman Mills School District says administrators are not doing enough to protect teachers and they want a plan in place.

Some Hickman Mills teachers say they don't feel safe, and Thursday night they let the district know that. It's all stemming from a parent accused of beating up a teacher.

Parents, students and faculty packed into a crowded school board meeting, demanding the school board protect its staff. A Truman Elementary School teacher's wife did not mince words.

"What policies, procedures and practices are being reevaluated and if there is not a reevaluation, then why? And two, how do you plan to ensure the safety of the teachers and students at Truman Elementary?" said Melanie Triplett.

Police said a parent hit a Truman Elementary teacher in the face at least five times, and then slammed her head against a file cabinet twice. Union President Rosie Davis spoke before the meeting about the teacher's condition.

"Her scars are healing, but emotionally she is still distraught. She is not ready to come back to work," Davis said.

Davis has raised concerns about teacher safety before, and Thursday night she called for a meeting with the board.

"We want the children to be safe. We want a safe learning environment. We want to make sure everyone is in the building that is supposed to be in the building, and that the building is secure," she said.

The superintendent said the issue of safety is being addressed.

"We're in constant evaluation and reevaluation in what we do along the lines of safety. We've had some of those conversations," said Dr. Dennis Carpenter.

The parent, Simone Baker, was charged with a municipal charge, but the superintendent said that's not serious enough. Carpenter said he's working to step up the charges.

Baker is due in court next month.
