Victims post items for sale online, robbed in person

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

We all know the one of the easiest ways to sell something is online. But Phoenix police Sgt. James Holmes said some recent transactions aren't going the way they should.

"They're (suspects) taking whatever they can get from that victim," Holmes said.

Holmes said opportunistic thieves are targeting electronics and money and have "scanned the internet looking for opportunities to make 'purchases,'" Holmes added.

He said the seller often agrees to meet the prospective buyer. But Holmes said they should meet in a public place, and not where the seller is potentially vulnerable.

On Aug. 11, a man met another man at the Shell gas station at the corner of Indian School and 27th Avenue to sell some jewelry.

"The victim goes over to the car and for whatever reason he gets inside the vehicle with the suspect, and that was the major error," Holmes explained.

The suspect not only got away with the stolen property, but also the victim's wallet with his credit card inside. Investigators said another man, not the suspect, used the card a short time after the robbery.

"I need them (victims) to be concerned about their safety. If you're gonna do this, you gotta do it right. You gotta have people with ya," Holmes said.
