PHOENIX (CBS5) -
An announcement is planned Wednesday designating the 50-year-old Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix as a historic landmark.
The city's Historic Preservation Zoning Commission determined the 2,650-seat structure met the eligibility criteria, in terms of the theater's significance, age and integrity.
The structure was built in 1963 and was known then as Phoenix Star Theatre. It was the brainchild of Buster Bonoff and Director Ed Greenburg who commissioned an architect and structural engineers to design this "Brutalism-in-the-round."
At the center of the circular theater is a 30-foot diameter rare rotating stage that can be configured three ways. The 360-degree rotating option allows every audience member to see the entire stage at various times of the show. With only 25 rows, the theater's staff said there is not a bad seat in the house.
Some of the most celebrated names in entertainment have appeared there - Liza Minelli, Liberace, Harry Belafonte, Rich Little, Sammy Davis Jr., Dom DeLuise, Ray Charles, Joan Rivers, Olivia Newton-John and Etta James, among many others.
The Celebrity Theatre is located at 440 N. 32nd St.
