Independence man sentenced to 7 years in girlfriend's death

Posted: Updated:

A man who shot and killed his girlfriend while he was drinking was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Sean Ray, of Independence, was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the February death of 46-year-old Kari Jean Tabor. He will be eligible for parole after five years if he completes an alcoholism treatment program.

Court records indicate Ray called 911 on Feb. 9 to report he had accidentally shot his girlfriend.

The Kansas City Star reports the couple lived together for 20 years, and relatives of both Ray and Tabor said they were satisfied with the sentence.
