SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A church in Spartanburg was shot more than 16 times during the weekend - and the pastor is responding to potential shooters with a message.

Legacy Outreach Church in the Pauline community was found riddled with bullets just before the church's Sunday service.

After the pastor discovered the damage he changed the sign on the front of the church to say, "16 bullet holes in our building, 3 bullets found in sanctuary, please aim other way."

"Somebody told me Sunday was the first day of deer season, so I'm just thinking somebody was down there in the woods shooting," Legacy Outreach's pastor Manning Strickland said. "They loaded their gun, but didn't load their brain."

But deputies don't believe this is a hunting accident and they are investigating it as a case of vandalism.

While the bullet holes were found in various locations around the church, Strickland said none of their equipment was damaged. He said there was debris found covering some chairs and the floor.

"I guarantee they're probably not going to want you to go to jail for it, but they just need some restitution to repair the damages," said Lt. Tony Ivey with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

There has been no word on how much the damage will fix to cost at this time.

Strickland would like for people to heed the sign's warning. And he said they could drop by the church.

"I'll give them their bullets back if they come see us," Strickland said.

Spartanburg County deputies are still trying to find out who is responsible for the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call 888-CRIME-SC.
