BELTON, MO (KCTV) -

Some local Boy Scouts will spend this weekend sleeping in cardboard boxes as they try to raise awareness of what it's like to be homeless.

"Camping in cardboard boxes to show people what it might be like to be homeless, also to attract attention to donate to the local food bank," said Jason Weinzierl with Boy Scout Troop 510.

Weinzierl and his fellow scouts will spend most of their weekend homeless.

"We did this last year, it was a pretty big success, we're hoping for twice as much as last year," he said.

Weinzierl said spending the weekend outside really makes him appreciate the house he'll head home to.

"I couldn't imagine sleeping in this (refers to box) for more than one night. It's fun the first night, but after that it gets scary," he said.

"The main thing is I want them to see the big picture. There's a whole lot more out there that we can do, even if it's just one day at a time," said Paul Fyffe, the scout master for Troop 510.

That message seems to be getting through to Boy Scout Samuel Arriaga. He said it's important to give back and be a productive citizen.

"To raise awareness. If we didn't do it, you might just be like, gosh, maybe you don't really see people who are homeless," Arriaga said.

Troop 510 hopes to collect nearly 5,000 pounds of food. On Sunday all of it will be donated to Heart N Hand, a food pantry and ministry that serves Cass County.

It's a serious effort, but there's time for some fun too.

"It was cool to be in a cardboard box," Arriaga said.

The scouts will be at the Hy-Vee in Belton, MO, located at 1307 E. North Ave., until 2 p.m. Sunday.
