TN NAACP leader among women arrested in immigration protest
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
More than 100 people were arrested during an immigration protest Thursday in Washington, DC, including a pair of well-known women who live in Middle Tennessee.
The protestors are part of a movement called "We Belong Together," and they wound up sitting in the intersection of New Jersey and Independence avenues in the nation's capital in a push for immigration reform.
They said they picked the location in order to be in front of the building that contains offices for the House of Representatives, and they want to challenge lawmakers to take up this issue.
Those arrested include two undocumented women who live in Tennessee, along with Gloria Sweet-Love, president of the Tennessee NAACP, and Megan Macaraeg, with the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition.
Earlier this summer, a video of Macaraeg's daughter, Josie Molina, asking U.S. Congressman Scott DesJarlais about immigration went viral online.
Macaraeg said her arrest as part of the Washington, DC, protest was well worth it.
"It was the largest gathering of women who willingly got arrested in recent memory. And I think it was the largest gathering of undocumented women, who took a huge risk," Macaraeg said. "Those of us who stood there with them have so much respect for the risk they're willing to take to demand fair immigration reform that keeps our families together and an end to deportations."
Many of the women who were arrested ended up spending about eight hours in jail, and it's important to note Washington, DC, police did not question anyone's immigration status.
