Overland Park dedicates 9/11 memorial, honors victims

Posted: Updated:

Local families are still mourning the loss of their loved ones killed in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Officials dedicated the victim's panel at the 9/11 memorial Wednesday morning at the Overland Park Fire Training Center.

The Overland Park honor guard placed a wreath, struck the bell and held a moment of silence.

The victim's panel lists the names of everyone who died on Sept. 11, 12 year ago.  Shirley and Robert Hemenway were at Wednesday's ceremony.  The name of their son, John, is on that plaque.

"I don't want people to forget.  It makes me know that people won't forget," Shirley Hemenway said.

"He was so happy to be at the Pentagon, to be home with his kids at night. He was a very intelligent individual and a great son," Robert Hemenway said.

Officials will also have two spotlights on the memorial Wednesday night to symbolize the two towers.
