Hazmat crews called on suspicious substance at IRS building

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Firefighters were called to the IRS building Wednesday on a suspicious-substance alarm in the mail room.

Authorities say someone spotted a suspicious package at 30 W. Pershing Rd. about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, and a security guard called the fire department.

A letter containing a white, powdery substance with an articulated threat was discovered.

A hazardous material team was called out to contain the suspicious substance.  The item in question was packaged, according to protocol, and forwarded to the Missouri Department of Public Health lab located in Jefferson City.

The scene was cleared just before noon, and officials said there was no threat to employees.

No one was ever evacuated from the IRS building in this incident.
