KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police said a man walked into Manual Career Technical Center Tuesday afternoon with a loaded gun in his backpack.

Officials said the gun was detected by security during a routine search of backpacks and the man then fled, leaving the backpack behind.

Police said the 30-year-old was a student at the school. He was found and arrested later that night. He will be charged with felony in possession of a firearm.

The incident happened about 5:30 p.m.

The school is located at 1215 E. Truman Rd.

The school district said they do operate evening adult education classes there.

This incident worked the way it was supposed to, said Andre Riley, the manager of public relations and marketing for Kansas City Public School. He added that's why they have guards doing those checks.

The guards didn't recognize the man. It is also unknown if he had any intention of using the gun inside the school, but district officials say this is exactly why they search bags at the door.

According to Missouri law, even with a permit/license and conceal carry permit, guns are not allowed in schools.
