Boat on freeway blocked lanes of Interstate 5 after crash

WILSONVILLE, OR (KPTV) -

A boat blocked traffic on Interstate 5 near Wilsonville for more than two hours Tuesday.

State police said the driver of a Chevy Suburban pulling a trailer loaded with a boat was in the right southbound lane of the freeway and passing a commercial truck in the middle lane south of Wilsonville.

Police said Bruce Hecht, 56, of Portland, was driving the Suburban and began to jackknife while slowing down for traffic ahead. The trailer loaded with the boat slid sideways and was hit by the semi. The boat was knocked off the trailer.

The truck then crashed into the Suburban, according to police.

When the vehicles came to a stop, they were blocking the freeway and a diesel spill was reported from the commercial truck.

The crash and ensuing cleanup closed all lanes around 9:45 a.m. One lane was reopened roughly one hour later, and all lanes of the freeway were reopened by noon.

The semi driver, Chuck Ruby, 42, of Salem, was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

There were no apparent injuries to the Chevy Suburban driver.

Police are continuing the investigation and no enforcement action has been taken at this time.
