Workers hurt at sewage pump station in Niantic

NIANTIC, CT (WFSB) -

Niantic officials are advising residents to go easy on flushing toilets and taking showers if possible after an issue at a sewage pump station on Tuesday.

Officials said two main electrical panels at the station malfunctioned, which caused an electrical fire.

"We had a power interruption that caused a small bang, shut power off this is main pump that sends water from Niantic to Waterford and ultimately to New London treatment plant," said First Selectman Paul Formica.

Two workers were taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for observation. They were conscious and alert when they were taken to the hospital, authorities said. The workers were released from the hospital Tuesday evening, Formica said.

"I saw one guy laying down on the cement and a gurney was pulled out of one of the emergency vehicles," said restaurant owner Grady Clark.

A pass pump, which is working off generators, is now being used to pump sewage into tanker trucks until repairs are completed.

Crews from Connecticut Light & Power came out to check the lines while they worked on getting everything fixed.

Formica said it may take a few days to get all the repairs completed.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the electrical fire. In addition to Occupational Safety and Health Administration, officials with Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection were notified.

Clark told Eyewitness News that he was grateful he's closed for the season.

"Had we been open, it certainly would have impacted us because normally we would have been open by 11 a.m.," Clark said.
