Portland Fire and Portland Police teamed up Monday night to rescue two people and their pets from a restricted area under the Burnside Bridge.

Now, those two people are facing criminal charges.

Crews were called out to the west end of the bridge at about 8 p.m. When they arrived, they found two people trapped in a sewer pump station. One was stuck on a small shelf with two dogs and a cat; the other had fallen into the water holding area, but was able to climb onto a pipe.

According to rescuers, the people had climbed over a chain link fence with barbed wire to get to the restricted area. Crews had to use a combination of ropes, harnesses and ladders to get them to safety.

Nobody was hurt and the pets were OK.

After interviewing the people involved, police determined Jasighian Baxter, 21, had climbed down a power cord to use the bathroom. Robert Morehouse, 23, then lost his balance and fell into the water.

They were both arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. They were booked in the Multnomah County Jail and their animals were taken by Multnomah County Animal Control.
