All Shawnee Mission District schools locked down after 'vague threat'

Posted: Updated:

All schools in the Shawnee Mission School District were locked down Monday as a precaution after someone made a comment about the district's safety, authorities said Monday afternoon.

The Overland Park Police Department learned about the comment and investigated it. A spokesman for the department said the agency determined there was no credible threat.

The district called it "a vague threat" and said the lockdown was ordered as a precaution.

All schools were ordered to keep their external doors shut, students weren't allowed outside at recess and all P.E. classes had to be held inside. Afternoon athletic practices are also being held inside.

A district spokeswoman said classes continued as normal.

"We appreciate our community partners who assist in keeping our schools safe each day," district spokeswoman Leigh Anne Neal said. "Anyone with information regarding this or any other threat of concern should contact law enforcement or school officials."

Some parents wrote on KCTV5's Facebook page that they were upset that the district didn't notify parents about the lockdown until hours after it began. Other parents praised the district's handling of the situation.

"I'm happy about how it was handled," Holly Grubbs said.

Officials said Monday night that the police received a telephone call at 7:30 a.m. Monday from a woman who claimed her teenage son was upset over a weekend disturbance. The caller claimed her son was heading to a Johnson County high school and might be armed. She then hung up and police found that the call-back number wasn't working.

The woman called back later to say that her son had returned home and everything was OK before she hung up a second time. Officers never found a student by the supposed name at the school he was suppose to be attending in Missouri.

Officers notified all area school districts. No other district went on lockdown.
