Zuerlein lifts Rams past AZ Cardinals 27-24

Arizona Cardinals lose season opener. Arizona Cardinals lose season opener.

Greg Zuerlein kicked a 48-yard field goal with 40 seconds left and the St. Louis Rams completed a fourth-quarter comeback with a 27-24 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

It was Zuerlein's fourth field goal of the game.

Larry Fitzgerald caught two touchdown passes from new quarterback Carson Palmer and the Arizona defense scored one touchdown.

The Cardinals, under new coach Bruce Arians, had an 11-point lead after Fitzgerald's 24-yarder late in the third quarter.

Jared Cook had two touchdown catches in his Rams debut. The tight end fumbled a potential third TD, a 55-yarder that would have opened the scoring, when rookie Tyrann Mathieu punched the ball free at the 8 and the play resulted in a touchback.

Twenty-six of the 53 players are new to the Cardinals' team this year, and that's not surprising given the state of this franchise when Arians replaced the fired Ken Whisenhunt.

Outside linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, one of the newcomers, said that a new coach wants his kind of players in place, especially on a team coming off a less-than-successful season.

Arizona was 5-11 a year ago, losing 11 of its last 12.

Arians said it's also the way of the NFL these days, with veteran players with bigger contracts being let go in favor of the less expensive younger alternative.
