Area firefighters had to battle flames and the heat while putting out residential fires on both sides of the state line Sunday.
The first one broke out about 2 a.m. at Belmont Boulevard and St. John Avenue. The fire started in the second floor of the house, which was destroyed.
No one was injured. A Mexican restaurant attached to the house saw smoke damage but no damage from the flames.
No one was hurt when a fire started about 11:15 a.m. at 10609 E. 46th Terrace. The fire was contained to a single room, but the home saw extensive smoke damage.
A deck fire in Leawood quickly spread to a duplex Sunday evening. Shortly after 6 p.m., Leawood and Overland Park firefighters responded to a fire in the 5200 block of west 121st Street.
The first units on the scene saw heavy fire and smoke from a roof of a duplex and additional crews were dispatched to the location.
According to Jason Rhodes of the Overland Park Fire Department, the third alarm was called to provide additional manpower. Johnson County Med-Act rotated firefighters out of service, checking them and hydrating crews before allowing them to return to fight the blaze.
No injuries have been reported and damage to the structure is substantial.
The original call to 911 indicated that the fire started in a grill and spread to the wood roof. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
