West side residents 'light up hate'

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Concerned citizens came together Saturday night to hold a demonstration against the recent violent attacks on the city's west side.

Dozens of residents met at West 93rd and Detroit Ave with flashlights, candles, and other lights for the rally called "Light up Hate."

The demonstration was in direct response to the beating of Jared Fox. Fox was violently attacked by a group of young men as he left a bar on Detroit Ave last Saturday night. Fox believes he was targeted because he was gay.

Community activists would like city officials to improve the lighting in the Detroit Ave area.

"Where there are more lights, there's less crime. If you have a well lit area, where everything is visible, there's no place to hide. If you have less places to hide you have less crime," said Ric Sardino, a community activist involved with the rally.

Residents would also like to see bushes and trees trimmed, and abandoned buildings become occupied.
