Surprise announcement at Agawam's first dog field day

Posted: Updated:

Plenty of tails were wagging today at the first ever field day event at Shea Field.

The park was filled with dog-oriented vendors and there were demonstrations by the Springfield Police Department's K-9 Unit.

The Agawam Dog Owners group hosted the event to help raise money for a future dog park.

To that extent, those in attendance heard from Mayor Richard Cohen, who had a big surprise for the group.

"We were awarded a grant for the development," Cohen stated. "I found out last week $246,000, which is both the design and the build of the entire park. I think it will probably be one of the premier parks in Western Mass if not the whole region."

Cohen said he hopes to start work on the project by next Spring.
