Police are investigating after bones that are believed to be human were found near Riverfront Park on Friday afternoon.

Kansas City police spokesman Capt. Tye Grant said some homeless people found the bones about 4 p.m. north of downtown Kansas City near Dora Street and Lydia Avenue. The remains were found near railroad tracks.

They then flagged down a railroad office who called police.

While it's unknown at this time, officials said the bones appear to be human.

Grant said the bones appear to have been there for some time, at least through the summer.

The medical examiner's office came out and took them away for further examination.

Police said it's too early to determine whether they actually are human remains and that could take several days.
