Regents to give update on NAU presidential search

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

The Arizona Board of Regents is expected to make an announcement Friday in the search for the next president of Northern Arizona University.

The board and the university declined to comment ahead of the announcement in Flagstaff.

The Arizona Board of Regents said there are 28 representatives on the NAU Presidential Search Committee. The board also hired executive search firm Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, which specializes in higher education executive recruitment to assist with the search process.

The search committee has been evaluating candidates to succeed John Haeger, who will retire when his contract expires in June 2015. Haeger says he plans to return to NAU later as a professor in higher education leadership and governance.

Whoever is chosen to replace him will oversee a university with a budget of $460 million.

The 70-year-old Haeger was appointed president of the Flagstaff school in 2001.

Under Haeger's leadership, NAU's enrollment grew by 34 percent in 12 years.

He oversaw an aggressive rebuilding of the aging Flagstaff campus and opened NAU-Yavapai in Prescott Valley, a campus that offers bachelor's degrees in three years.

NAU serves more than 26,000 students at campuses across the state and online. Haeger said recently that he expects growth to slow at the school's main campus in Flagstaff.
