U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver held a town hall Thursday night to hear from constituents about the proposed military strike against Syria.
About 200 people attended the meeting.
Cleaver has indicated he will vote against President Barack Obama's request to launch missile strikes against Syria. Both Cleaver and Obama are Democrats.
Obama wants to strike after he said Syria president Bashar Hafez al-Assad used sarin gas against his own people, killing more than 1,400, including women and children.
But many Americans are war weary and oppose military intervention. Some residents told Cleaver that the United States cannot afford another military conflict and there will be no benefit to America's interests.
Cleaver, a former Kansas City mayor, said he believes those who favor a strike are misplacing their anger.
"Are we infuriated over the method of the murders in Syria or the fact that people were killed? We've had atrocities all over the world, and we've never interfered," he said. "So what is the difference about it? Is it the nerve gas that infuriates us or is it murder? We need to answer that question first."
Cleaver anticipates the debate will begin in the House next week and the first votes could come next week as well. A key Senate committee voted to authorize strikes on a 10-7 vote.
