MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

It was a terrifying morning for a Valley mother when she witnessed a man jump in her vehicle and take off with her daughter and elderly mother inside.

Police said the 1-year-old daughter and 70-year-old grandmother stayed in the car Thursday morning while the woman went to Food City at Eighth Avenue and Alma School Road in Mesa.

The woman saw the man jump in her SUV in the parking lot as she was going in the grocery store and immediately called 911, as the suspect drove toward Tempe.

Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Ralph Esposito Jr.

Esposito drove to near Arizona Mills mall and the door was partially opened as the grandmother was fighting the suspect, officers said. A Tempe police officer was driving by, saw the struggle and pulled up behind the vehicle.

The suspect tried to flee, police said, but only got about two blocks before he was caught by officers.

The child and the grandmother were not hurt.

Esposito was booked into jail on two counts of kidnapping, one count of theft of means of transportation and aggravated DUI.
