Rancher arrested in Skywalk road construction zone

MEADVIEW, AZ (AP/CBS5) -

A Las Vegas businessman who operates a dude ranch near the Grand Canyon Skywalk has been arrested for trespassing.

A Hualapai tribal police officer arrested Nigel Turner on Tuesday. Tribal spokesman Dave Cieslak says Turner ignored orders to leave a restricted construction zone where crews are paving a road to the Skywalk that runs adjacent to Turner's property.

"The arresting officer followed all statewide police procedures," Cieslak said in a statement.

Cieslak says the tribe will recommend to the Mohave County Attorney's Office that Turner be charged with a single count of trespassing. The office said Wednesday that it hasn't received a referral.

Turner contends the arrest came without warning after he asked the crew's foreman whether explosives were being used in construction.

Turner complained of chest pains after he was put into a patrol car and was treated at a Kingman hospital.

Tuesday's incident is the second time Turner has been arrested this year, Cieslak said. In June, Mohave County sheriff's deputies arrested him on suspicion of threatening a worker on public property near the Diamond Bar Road construction site. During that altercation, Turner reportedly told the worker he had a gun.
