Police: Man unsuccessfully tries to kill wife, himself

Posted: Updated:

Police said a man shot his wife in the face and then turned the gun on himself. But the murder-suicide attempt failed and now both of them remain in the hospital.

"I just seen the couple coming out hollering and screaming," Cindy Good said.

Good said Tuesday afternoon she heard her neighbors fighting outside in their yard at Fifth Street and Splitlog Avenue in Kansas City, KS. But, she said, she never imagined that hours later the fight between the newly married couple of only three months would turn to violence.

"They seemed really happy. Always together. To themselves. Quiet, nice people," she said.

But according to relatives of the victim, Misty Sigler, they said her husband Mark would become a different person when he was drinking. They believe he was drinking Tuesday night when he allegedly pulled a gun and shot Misty Sigler in the face while she was lying on the couch.

The bullet struck her through the cheek.

Then Mark Sigler allegedly put the gun to his temple and tried to kill himself, but the bullet grazed his skull.

Misty Sigler's teenage son called police for help, and now Misty and Mark Sigler are both in the hospital and expected to survive.

"Drinking causes a lot of problems and a loaded gun's even worse. That and alcohol don't go too well," Good said.

The neighbor said she prays for Misty Sigler and her two children and has a message for other women who find themselves in a dangerous relationship.

"Don't stay in that. It's not going to get better - it will get worse. Get up and get away while you are able. Life is more important," Good said.
