PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Two Phoenix police officers are recovering after being shot by a suspect overnight.

Each of the officers were shot in the leg early Wednesday morning when trying to catch two suspects from an earlier shooting in Mesa. Police said a woman was shot near a canal on Brown Street about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said the woman was not very cooperative, but did tell police enough information for them to start looking for the vehicle.

Officers spotted the shooter's car and people inside matching the description of the suspects. They chased the suspects to Second Avenue and St. Anne Avenue.

The driver, identified as Emmanuel Castillo, 25, jumped out but didn't get very far before he was caught.

The passenger, Nazario Castillo, 27, hid under another vehicle in a carport at 200 W. St. Anne, but when a police dog found him, he started shooting, police said.

Nazario was lying on his stomach and rolled to his side and fired one shot from a sawed-off shotgun he had concealed underneath him, said Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump.

One officer was struck in the lower leg and another in the thigh by "bird shot" pellets, Crump said.

One of the officers was carrying a Sage gun and fired three rounds, striking Nazario as a police dog moved in to apprehend him, Crump said.

Nazario Castillo also suffered a dog bite, but all involved are expected to fully recover.

Both officers were taken to the hospital for treatment. One officer was treated and released, and the second was admitted for observation.

Emmanuel Castillo was booked into jail on charges of unlawful flight. Nazario was treated and released from a local hospital and booked on seven counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and other felony charges.

The two suspects were arrested.

There is no word yet on the woman's condition in the Mesa shooting.

Mesa police continue to investigate.
