INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

A busy area of Independence was shut down for 11 hours on Tuesday after a suspicious package was found lying in a motel parking lot.

Officers were called to the Super 8 at Noland Road and Lynn Court about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday.

"There were items in the box that were consistent with what might be used to make an explosive device," Independence Police Department Officer Tom Gentry said. "Wires. That sort of thing. Beyond that, I can't get into detail."

The area surrounding the motel, which includes a busy intersection, was shut down until 5:30 p.m. as a precaution. A bank, restaurants and Quik-Trip were among the businesses forced to shut down.

Noland Road was closed between 39th Street and Interstate 70. Authorities said considering all of their options is why it took so long to dismantle the device.

A worker at the motel told KCTV5's Sandra Olivas that she spoke to a woman who works the front desk.  That employee said someone called her at the front desk and threatened her.  An hour later a customer saw a small box in the parking lot.

Cierra Bratsberg is in the area visiting her father. She had left her room at the Best Western motel, and when she tried to return was unable to do so. She first went to a nearby Denny's restaurant but had to relocate to a Hardee's restaurant when the Denny's was evacuated.

"It's crazy," she said. "I would think they would move the box somewhere else. They are shutting down the whole area. People have places to go."
