Inmates in the Shawnee County Jail could have access to cordless phones.

The County Commissioners heard the proposal Thursday.

Those who proposed the idea emphasized that they aren't cell phones, conversations would still be recorded and inmates would have to check out the phones.

"Inmates who have more contact with family and friends from the outside tend to act and behave better in jail. They tend to get out quicker," said Shawnee County Corrections Director Brian Cole.

The cordless phones would cost more than $10,000. The jail said it would mainly be paid through the inmates' commissary fund.
