LEXINGTON, MO (KCTV) -
An elderly couple was killed in a fire early Friday in Lexington.
Nick and Maxine Deamos had an income tax and notary business inside their home. They are beloved in their community, and many are grieving.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze. The Missouri Fire Marshal's Office is leading the investigation.
Lexington Police Chief Don Rector said the blaze was reported at 6:11 a.m. and firefighters responded at 6:14 a.m.
The woman died at Lafayette Regional Health Center. The man was rushed by medical helicopter to a hospital where he received treatment, but he later died from his injuries, authorities said.
The three-story brick house at 923 Highland St. was completely engulfed in flames, Rector said. The home is now a shell, he added. The back section of the home saw the worst damage.
The home did not have any working smoke detectors, authorities said.
"The bedroom wasn't very burnt, but the heat and smoke, I think, is what got them," neighbor Ronnie Wilson said.
He had lived next door to the couple for nearly three decades. He mowed their yard while they did his taxes.
"They were good people," he said. "They treated me like family and I treated them like family."
The couple also did Rector's taxes every year along with a number of other area residents.
"They were friends of mine. It's a great loss," he said. "They were a happily married couple of years. Friends of just about everybody in the community."
Nick Deamos was 84 years old while his wife was 79 years old.
Family members are working to retrieve tax records that weren't burned in the blaze.
Neighbors saw the smoke and flames and alerted authorities. One neighbor tried to use a garden hose to put out the flames before firefighters arrived, but the blaze was too intense. Two neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution. One home saw the siding damaged from the heat of the flames.
