Flowers, balloons and hands holding each other up replaced crime scene tape during a candlelight vigil Saturday night to remember a mother and her 3-year-old daughter found slain.
Myeisha J. Turner, 28, and her young daughter, Damiah L. White, were found dead about 7:15 p.m. Friday inside their duplex in the 5500 block of Wabash Avenue.
"Cases such as these, involving a child ... the crime of homicide is horrible in itself, but when it involves a child, it's unimaginable," Sgt. Stacey Graves said. "Our hearts go out to the family."
Turner's cousin found the horrible scene. She had come to check on the family and first found Turner's 1-year-old son wandering alone but unhurt.
"Who did this? What type of human being could do something like this," Turner's mother, Cheryl Turner, said.
For Cheryl Turner, everything is now pain, grief and confusion.
"Myeisha is a good girl. She was in school. She worked every day. She was a good mother as well. This just does not make any sense to me at all," Cheryl Turner said.
Myeisha Turner studied nursing and worked at St. Luke's, and then there's little Damiah.
"She was beautiful," Cheryl Turner said.
The family can just imagine her wanting to try to protect her mother.
"Very, very smart. I would always say she had been here before," Cheryl Turner said.
And now that they're both gone, the family is asking the public to be their voices.
Volunteers posted flyers in the neighborhood asking people to speak out about what happened and not look the other way." And that was the theme of Saturday night's vigil, asking people to come forward with any leads.
"We're talking about a child, an innocent baby," family friend Maria Frencher said. "We have to take a stand, and we have to stop this violence."
Family members of the two victims are asking anyone with information on their loved one's killer to step forward.
"This person, this animal, needs to be brought to justice, this is just not acceptable," Cheryl Turner said.
Police have no suspect information and are urging anybody with information to call them or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
Myeisha Turner and her daughter's deaths mark Kansas City's 71st and 72nd homicides of the year.
