Police said they shot a man in the hand after he broke into a family member's home and refused to come out.

Police were called to a home at East 29th Street and Wallace Avenue on a prowler call at 10:52 a.m. Friday. The house is just north of U.S. Highway 40 and east of Interstate 435. The caller said a man armed with a knife was trying to break out car windows and break into a house.

When officers arrived, they learned the man was successful in breaking into the home and he is the stepson of the homeowner.

Officers spent a couple hours Friday morning trying to talk the man into coming out of a house, but were unsuccessful, resulting in a standoff.

A neighbor alerted the homeowner to the break-in and police said the homeowner told them the man has a violent past and there were guns in the house.

As the tactical squad was setting up, police said the man came out with a gun in his hand and an officer shot him in the hand. The man was taken into custody shortly before 1:30 p.m. with minor injuries.

Police also said the man has an outstanding absconder warrant from Sedgwick County.
