Authorities: Man lied about shooting car burglar with shotgun

LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

Prosecutors say a man was lying when he claimed to have shot a man breaking into his vehicle.

Police discovered that John P. Barton, 23, of Lawrence, knew the shooting victim, prosecutors said.

"And there may have been some type of altercation between the two earlier in the day," according to a statement from Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson.

Barton was charged with attempted first-degree murder. He made his first court appearance Thursday.

A 20-year-old man was hit with a blast from a shotgun just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday. This occurred in the 2300 block of Murphy Drive. He suffered wounds throughout his body and was rushed to a Kansas City area hospital for treatment.

Barton told officers that he fired shots at someone in the parking lot after that person was breaking into his vehicle, according to a news release from the Lawrence Police Department. Barton cooperated with police during their initial investigation, the news release said.

After the officers completed their review, they forwarded the case file to Branson's office for charges.
