A Cincinnati area interstate is back open after a Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy was rear ended by a semi-tractor trailer.
It happened on northbound 275, near the 18 mile marker, just after 2 p.m.
According to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Tom Lange was sitting in the left lane of the interstate in a sheriff's cruiser with his lights on. The deputy was attempting to alert drivers of a broken down van blocking the left lane just ahead of his location, near the Indiana/Ohio state line.
Authorities say Michael Brunner, 42, of Sunman, Indiana, was driving a semi-tractor trailer in the right lane. Brunner changed lanes from the right to the left in order to avoid a slow-moving motorcycle -- who had slowed after seeing Lange's cruiser.
Authorities say when Brunner switched to the left lane, he then saw Deputy Lange's cruiser and quickly braked and steered to the right but failed to maintain control.
Brunner's semi jack knifed and hit the back of Lange's cruiser, causing the deputy to become entrapped.
The Whitewater Township Fire Department responded to the scene and Deputy Lange had to be mechanically extricated from the cruiser.
Lange was flown to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he is listed in serious but stable condition.
Drug, alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash. Brunner was cited for failing to maintain reasonable control.
At one point, the road was completely shut down from Indiana to Kilby Road. All lanes have since reopened to drivers in the area.
