Heavy rains wash away Appling County roads

BAXLEY, GA (WTOC) -

Heavy rains made for dangerous road conditions Monday, particularly on unpaved roads.

Melton Chapel Road in Baxley was one of the worst hit roads when more than 9 inches of rain fell on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The rushing waters washed the road away.

The Appling County Public Works Department has been busy to say the least.

So have 911 operators who are taking calls about the roads and making sure they dispatch first responders with their safety in mind as well.

"We've been working since dawn checking the roads,"  said Tena Dyal of the Appling County Public Works Dept.

The rain-swelled creek pushed the drainage pipes right off their foundations and washed 1,600 cubic feet of dirt away. That's enough to fill two dump trucks.

There is a road closed sign further down Melton Chapel Road, but they had to use so many signs that they ran out and had to make do with what they had.

As of Aug. 20, these roads are closed in Appling County:

  • Davis Landing to Lennox
  • Buckhorn
  • Milton Hallman
  • Doyle Road to Piney Blufft to West River
Hot spots in Appling County:
  • Harmony Church Road
  • Graham Zoar-Herrtington Road
  • Hilltop to East River

Tommy Davis, Superintendent of Public Works for Appling County, confirmed Tuesday morning that 8 more roads have closed due to Monday's flooding.

School officials say school will be closed Tuesday for students and staff due to road conditions.
