Louisburg High School quarterback killed in crash

Posted: Updated:

Students, teachers and staff are remembering a Miami County high school quarterback who died in a single-car wreck Saturday evening.

Auston McLellan, a senior at Louisburg High School, died from injuries he sustained in the crash that happened about 8:45 p.m. near West 271st Street and Metcalf Road.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office said the 17-year-old was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse and went off the roadway after passing another vehicle.  The car overturned, ejecting McLellan, and collided with a utility pole.

Deputies are still trying to determine if McLellan was wearing a seatbelt.

McLellan was taken to a Kansas City-area hospital, where he later died.

His passenger, 17-year-old Drew Carder, also of Louisburg, was taken to the hospital where he was later released.

School officials met with about 150 students at the high school Sunday morning to offer updated information and help them understand and deal with the situation, Louisburg superintendent Sharon Zoellner said.

"For lack of a better word, he was illuminating, generous, caring ... everything you want a kid to be," McLellan's uncle, Greg Gentry, said.

Gentry said the way the town of Louisburg has reached out to his family has been humbling.

"Being there while we were at the hospital, to being there this morning to greet our family," Gentry said.

McLellan's classmates organized a candlelight vigil Sunday night at the school's football stadium. Grief counselors will be at the high school Monday for students and staff.

Gentry said his family is still in shock. Football practice was supposed to start this week, and McLellan was the team captain.

"It is really hard right now. I can only imagine what my sister and her family are going through," Gentry said.
